Why the Controversy?

For many years, my wife was an avid bingo player at Newton Bingo Country and quite lucky (she once won a prize large enough to buy a new car). She also became an avid casino fan, but was generally disappointed in Vancouver metro area facilities; we commonly crossed the border to play in Washington casinos like the Skagit and Silver Reef.

Throughout this time, she was cautious and strict about gambling budgets. She would set an affordable limit before each visit, and she stuck to that limit. Although I understand the concerns about "gamblers with a problem", we need to realize that there are also MANY gamblers who recognize the need to keep entertainment spending in check.

We shouldn't close down or refuse all casino facilities because of the gambling problems suffered by some. That would be like closing down all pubs and bars because some people drink and drive. Nor should we worry extensively about crime associated with gambling venues. Not once, in more than 10 years of visits, did we ever encounter a "dubious person" inside or outside of a U.S. casino, including Las Vegas. Security down there is very tight and very effective.

Two final comments:

- I am disappointed by the prospect that Newton Bingo Country will close if the casino goes ahead. Bingo is very attractive to people (especially seniors) who simply want an affordable place to "hang out" with friends for an evening.

Some Washington casinos also offer a bingo facility on their premises and I hope Gateway will consider doing the same. At worst, it could be operated as a break-even service for seniors and others who enjoy the game.

- When my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer, we "used" casinos as a means of temporarily distracting her attention from her terrible problem. Those who are fully opposed to such facilities fail to recognize their value for people like my wife - who needed a few hours to close out the real world, from time to time.

Hi Neighbors,

The time is drawing down for decisions to be made regarding the proposed South Surrey casino. The time for public input is passing quickly. The articles in the newspapers make it appear that it is already a “done deal”. NOT SO!!
